Huawei Kenya is planning to release into the local market yet another member of its Y smartphone budget line later in the month.
Like it did with the Y7 Prime 2018 back in April, Huawei is doing that “price guess” thing yet again. This is a competition that sees members of the public who correctly guess the price of the Huawei Y5 Prime 2018 (up to 200 people this time round), walk away with goodies from the Chinese device maker.
What’s different from last time is that Huawei has chosen to go with Jumia Kenya for the online launch.
As such, it is Jumia which is running the price guess contest on its website. The contest runs from today all the way to the 8th of July at which time we expect it to start selling on Jumia before hitting retail stores thereafter.
The Huawei Y5 Prime 2018 comes with most of the features that made the Y7 Prime 2018 standout but in a smaller and cheaper package. The device should have the face unlock feature that we can find on the Y7 Prime 2018 (just not like the one I had, though), a three-card slot for dual-SIM and memory card slotting, a bigger battery (hopefully that translates to better battery life), the same camera modules as the Y7 Prime 2018 (whose cameras I did like despite falling foul to my review units overall shortcomings), Android 8.1 Oreo, and the 18:9 display that is all the rage among budget devices this year (Huawei calls it “FullView”).
Huawei says that the Y5 Prime 2018 “is designed especially for the young generations who are looking for a chic big screen, long battery life and more value.” Here’s to hoping that it really is. Because there’s lots of competition out there. Infinix’s Hot 6 Pro is the device to beat at the price that we expect the Huawei Y5 Prime 2018 to start at.
The next question becomes, when do we get to see the Y5 Prime 2018’s superior, the Huawei Y6 2018 which we thought it would be launching with when we got a whiff of the news back in May? And its small sibling, the Android One-powered Y3 2018?
