Tecno Pouvoir 4 battery review: Tough balance

The Tecno Pouvoir 4 is a big device.

You know what goes with a big device? A big battery.

That last part is not necessarily foreign to the Tecno Pouvoir series of budget devices. The first three generations of the device featured beefy 5,000mAh units, bringing the highest endurance rating to the lower end smartphone market, with offshoots like the Pouvoir 3 Plus getting to the territory now graced by the fourth generation.

The push to 7 inches meant that Tecno probably needed to tie some loose ends if it was to keep the kind of endurance rating the Pouvoir has become known for over the few years of its existence.

As I found out in my usage of the device over the last few weeks, they have largely been able to achieve that.

For a heavy user like yours truly, the Tecno Pouvoir 4 can be successfully pushed around for over a day – up to a day and a half – before finally giving in to the laws of Physics.

I guess that for moderate users they should be able to squeeze more – up to 2 days – out of the device. Your usage will dictate the battery longevity.

There is quite a lot that we can say about the device’s cameras but get this: the more you use the higher the drain.

A good thing about the Tecno Pouvoir 4’s battery is that the drain is a trickle and not a straight sloppy curve that turns the battery percentage on the notification bar into some sort of unofficial counter.

That is also the case when charging the device.

With no fast-charging, we don’t expect it on a Kshs 15,000 device, either, topping up the Tecno Pouvoir 4 is a chore. From my own testing, you need to spare at least 4 hours to charge the device from 0 to 100%. In a day and age where rapid charging is all the rage, that can be quite a lot to take in but hey, it’s what you get for a device that has almost double the battery capacity of most devices in its range out there.

What this means, also, is that the Tecno Pouvoir 4 is the kind of device that you leave charging overnight. It won’t juice up real quick as you take a shower so that you can step out with it. Patience is the name. Or, you could adopt what is a universally recommended practice: just top up your device any time you have the chance while avoiding draining it all the way down to 0% and juicing it up all the way to 100% if you want to ensure its longevity.

Here is the low down: if you are considering the Tecno Pouvoir 4 on the strength of its advertised beefy battery then yes, you are in for a treat. However, just know that that is checked by the amount of time it takes to charge it. A tough balance.
