Equity Bank Kenya users who have their phone numbers linked to their accounts are now being charged whenever they transact.
In a bizarre move, effective April 24th, the bank is charging users Kshs 2.26 per SMS sent to them whenever they transact.
According to the bank’s customer service team, “the charges apply to mobile and online transaction confirmation alerts”.
The move is sure to irk customers already burdened by the return of charges for transactions made when they transfer money from their mobile money wallets (like M-Pesa) to their bank accounts and vice-versa.
Rival I&M Bank (Kenya) surprised many by going against the grain and dropping bank-to-mobile money wallet charges two months ago.
