Google One subscribers in Kenya will from next month be subjected to new prices when paying for the cloud storage service. This comes after the company started sending out emails to existing users confirming the change. An update has also been made on the official support page.
The new prices came into effect for new Google One subscribers on September 21. For existing customers, the price hike will reflect from October 21, 2023. Instead of Kshs 200, this change means I’ll pay Kshs 250 to renew my 100GB base plan. Those on the 200GB plan will pay Kshs 380 while 2TB now costs Kshs 1,250, up from the previous Sh 1,000.
5TB of Google One storage will cost Kshs 3,120 while 10TB will set you back Kshs 6,250. The latter represents a massive price hike of Kshs 1,250. There are also changes to the cost of the top tier 20TB and 30TB plans, where you’ll now pay Kshs 12,500 and Kshs 18,750 respectively.
Effective September 21, 2023, the price of Google One plans purchased from Google will increase in Kenya and Nigeria. New members of Google One can subscribe at the updated price beginning September 21, 2023. Current members are charged the new price when their subscription renews the first time on or after October 21, 2023. If existing members don’t wish to renew their subscription at the new price, they may cancel their membership on or before October 20, 2023.
As you may have noticed, Google One price hike is not limited to Kenya. Google says this change will also affect Nigeria. Granted, it’s possible the company is simply reacting to the weakening local currencies against the US dollar. After all, this has become a norm with foreign companies in recent times, so it shouldn’t be anything surprising.
