Remember the good ol’ days when smartphones were a luxury and the Safaricom SIM Toolkit was your gateway to the thrilling world of M-PESA? I do, and sometimes I’m forced to revisit those nostalgic times, usually when my internet connection decides to take an impromptu vacation. If you’ve been to some remote parts of this country, you can relate.
While I appreciate the nostalgic vibes and added security of the SIM Toolkit, using it can sometimes feel like I’m being involuntarily enrolled in an anger management course. And the main culprit for this frustration? The dreaded back button.
Seriously, Safaricom, what’s the deal? Let’s say I’m at a busy M-PESA shop, about to withdraw some cash. My fingers, in their infinite clumsiness, accidentally press the back button instead of deleting a wrong digit in the agent store number. Poof! With the efficiency of a malevolent genie, the SIM Toolkit whisks me back to the very beginning of my MPESA transaction! “Start over, my friend,” it seems to mock.
Sure, in the grand scheme of things, this is hardly a world crisis. However, the absurdity of it all is enough to make anyone slightly unhinged. It’s the digital equivalent of meticulously filling a form only to have a rogue gust of wind snatch it away, forcing you to start from scratch. If someone at Safaricom is reading this, how about one step back instead of taking me back to the beginning? If I realize I keyed in the wrong MPESA agent number when entering the store number, let me go back one step and edit the agent number instead of making me restart the whole process. I don’t have to go back to “Withdraw Cash > From Agent” to fix my mistake. One step back is enough!
Now, I understand that the SIM Toolkit was probably designed in an era when phones had the processing power of a potato. But it’s 2024, for crying out loud! Can’t we have a simple “one-step-back” function to save us from restarting the entire process? It would be a small change, but trust me, it would significantly elevate the user experience, especially in a market where people still use entry-level phones that easily slow down after a few years of use. For such phones, this whole process can quickly turn into a nightmare if the SIM Toolkit takes ages to reload.
Safaricom sim tool kit should allow us take one step back bana.

Safaricom, I get you’re busy conquering the world with M-PESA and all that jazz, but how about throwing us “feature phone peasants” a bone? A simple tweak to the back button could be the difference between a serene M-PESA experience and an embarrassing outburst in a crowded shop. Yes, you can make it happen!
