Infinix, a brand popular among Kenyans, is part of Transsion, one of the biggest smartphone makers globally. Their devices dominate Asian, African, and European markets, but they’ve understandably been absent from the massive US market. Apparently, that’s about to change with the rumored US launch of the Infinix GT 20 Pro.
While definitely a huge milestone for the company, I don’t think this is a necessary move for Infinix. Does America even need another mid-range Android phone from a Chinese company they’ve probably never heard of? And realistically, can Infinix truly compete in the US market against the dominant Apple and Samsung? We know the value and quality Infinix delivers. However, Americans are notorious for sticking to the familiar – Apple and Samsung rule the roost. Plus, there’s lingering distrust towards Chinese tech brands due to geopolitical reasons, which won’t help Infinix’s cause. If you’re old enough, you sure know what America put Huawei through for reasons only known to the west.
Let’s not forget the importance of carrier support in the US. Did Infinix miss the memo? Unless someone didn’t notify them, they should know that launching a phone there without major carrier backing is a recipe for limited success. Infinix is unlikely to secure those partnerships right away, again, thanks to their Chinese origin.
Instead of chasing a market that might not truly welcome them, why not double down where the Infinix brand already shines? Kenya, and Africa at large, loves the brand. Investing more in these tried-and-true markets would be a smart move. Improve on what’s already great, deliver even better value for the money, and solidify that connection with loyal consumers.
Of course, competition is always good, and there’s no doubt the rumored Infinix GT 20 Pro specs point to a decent device. Who knows, maybe in the long run Infinix can crack the US market with their signature affordability. But for now, there’s no reason to risk diluting efforts in a place where they might not get the recognition they truly deserve.
