Huawei Mobile Kenya has today announced the introduction into the local market of the nova Y60 smartphone.

The device had been up for pre-order for the past week.

The Huawei nova Y60 is going for Kshs 23,000 online and across stores countrywide.

“We have also put in an early Christmas gift whereby for every purchase you get a Free Gift pack,” Huawei notes in a statement announcing the device’s local launch and availability.

The smartphone, one of the few that we have seen from the Chinese device maker this year, features a 6.6-inch HD+ LCD panel, a MediaTek Helio P35 chipset, 4GB RAM, 64GB onboard storage, a 13-megapixel main camera at the back flanked by a pair of 5-megapixel and 2-megapixel ultra-wide-angle and depth sensors respectively.

On the front is an 8-megapixel selfie snapper. It packs a 5,000mAh battery that charges via the usual 2amp wall adapters. That is to say that there is no special magic to juice it up. At least the charging port is a USB Type-C one.

Disappointingly (but also understandable given the situation Huawei has found itself in over the last few years), the device arrives running Android 10 with a newer layer of Huawei’s custom overlay, EMUI, version 11.

In Kenya, the device is available in Crush Green and Midnight Black colours.

At that price, the device is undercut by the very excellent Tecno Camon 18 (not Premier, just the standard model) which, for much much less, offers more and the nova can barely keep up feature-wise.

Recently, Huawei also introduced another mobile device, this time round a tablet, in the Kenyan market. The MatePad T10, like the nova Y60, is going for Kshs 23,000 while its more capable sibling, the MatePad T10s, is priced at Kshs 29,000.

Earlier on, the company had introduced the MatePad 11 in the local market after a lengthy hiatus.
