Xiaomi has confirmed that MIUI 14 will be unveiled alongside the Xiaomi 13 series in China on December 1st at 7 PM Beijing time. The new custom OS from the Chinese company succeeds MIUI 13 and will run on Android 12 and 13.

In the build up to the release, various executives from Xiaomi have taken to Weibo to discuss what new features MIUI 14 will bring, and the improvements in performance it offers over the outgoing MIUI 13. For starters, MIUI 14 is being touted as the most responsive version of its smartphone and tablet OS.

Jin Fan, the company manager at Xiaomi, has even claimed that MIUI 14 is more streamlined and lightweight than any other Android-based OS. This is definitely a bold claim since previous versions of MIUI have been known to come prepackaged with different first and third-party apps and services that greatly contribute to the bloat.

To Xiaomi’s credit, these prepackaged apps and services are easily uninstalled should you wish to do so, unlike on other custom Android operating systems where uninstalling preinstalled apps is more difficult and almost impossible in some cases.

According to reports, Xiaomi decided to remove the bloat currently present in MIUI 13 to ensure the next iteration of their OS is as lean as possible, with no unnecessary bells and whistles that are not needed.

However, it is important to note that Jin Fan is making these claims for the Chinese audience, and the company releases different ROMs in China and other markets including Europe and India. Whether these other regions will receive the bloat-free ROM will be interesting to see.

Despite MIUI 14 debuting on December 1st on the new Xiaomi 13 and 13 Pro, a global rollout will likely wait until early next year. The new flagships from Xiaomi will become only the second series to run Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, after the Vivo X90 Pro Plus.

Xiaomi has not provided any other hardware information regarding the Xiaomi 13 series. However, its camera performance should be impressive given the partnership that camera experts Leica and Xiaomi have. The previous Xiaomi flagships, the Xiaomi 12 series had three variants, but at the time of writing it seems that the Xiaomi 13 series will only have two, with the Ultra variant possibly arriving at a later date.
