If String Quartets, Beethoven, Mozart, Bach and all that classics shebang is your cup of tea then listen up: you can have a healthy unlimited supply of them on your phone courtesy of Apple. Available since March on iPhones only, Apple Music Classical has sought to amplify the reach of classical music to enthusiasts and new fans alike.
Starting today, Android device users can also get to enjoy classical music through the dedicated app by downloading it straight from the Google Play Store.
The Apple Music Classical app has more than 5 million songs.
Asked why it saw the need to have a separate app for classical music, Apple responded this way:
“Classical music is different. It has longer and more detailed titles, multiple artists for each work, and hundreds of recordings of well-known pieces. The Apple Music Classical app is designed to support the complex data structure of classical music.”
The Apple Music Classical app is a result of Apple’s acquisition of classical music streaming service Primephonic 2 years ago. It was folded into the main Apple Music app immediately after the deal closed. The classical music genre on the Apple Music app is what was later spun off to become the standalone Apple Music Classical app.
While that is so, a subscription to Apple Music is required in order to use Apple Music Classical.
The most interesting thing about the app’s debut on Android is that it is becoming available on the platform even before a Mac and iPad version becomes available. We understand that the app is not yet optimized for use on car infotainment systems through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Android 9 or a later version is needed in order to run the app which is available everywhere around the world where Apple’s music streaming service is available.
