Attention Xiaomi HyperOS users: If you’ve recently applied for bootloader unlocking, Xiaomi has officially released a step-by-step guide to help you unlock your device. However, proceed with caution as this process wipes all data and carries potential security risks.

For those unsure whether they have an unlocked bootloader or not, you can confirm this by heading to your device’s Settings > About Phone > Detailed info and specs > Tap the system version option multiple times to activate Developer mode. Navigate to Settings > Additional settings > Developer options > Device Unlock Status, if it shows “Locked”, then your device can be unlocked.

With that out of the way:

  • Back up ALL your data to a computer.
  • Insert a SIM card and connect to mobile data.
  • Be logged in to your Xiaomi Account and bind it to your device by heading to Device Unlock status > Agree > Add account and device.
  • Enable OEM unlocking and USB debugging.
  • Download Mi Unlock software on your PC using this link and sign in.

When done with the above, follow the steps below to unlock the bootloader of your Xiaomi smartphone running the global version of HyperOS.

  • Power off your device, then simultaneously press the power button and volume down button to enter FASTBOOT mode.
Connect your device to your PC using a USB cable.
  • Open the Mi Unlock software, and the system will check if your Xiaomi Account is bound to your device or not.
  • Check whether the “Phone connected” message appears in the Mi Unlock software, if it shows that the connection is successful; if not, please reconnect, or replace the USB cable, and the USB port and try again.
  • Once the connection is successful, click the “Unlock” button in the Mi Unlock software.
  • If your Xiaomi Account has unlock permission, then the unlock will be successful later, and your device will automatically restart, if not, start it manually.
  • After unlocking successfully, your device’s Developer Options (Settings > Additional settings > Developer options) will show unlocked.
  • If your Xiaomi Account doesn’t have unlock permissions, please go to Xiaomi Global Community to apply for unlock permission, after getting the permission, follow the above steps to try again.

It’s worth noting that changing your region to Global before applying requires a 72-hour waiting period. Also, unlocking the bootloader erases all data and may have unpredictable effects, so proceed only if you understand and accept the risks. For those whose accounts lack permission, apply on the Xiaomi Global Community. But do keep in mind that this process is for users who have already applied and approved for bootloader unlocking, so double-check your status before proceeding. Xiaomi also warns that users won’t receive HyperOS updates if the bootloader remains unlocked.
