Microsoft Edge is making waves in the mobile browsing world with the introduction of browser extensions in its latest beta update on Android. First reported by X user Leopeva64, this feature puts Edge ahead of its biggest competitor, Google Chrome, which currently lacks extension support on Android.

This update, available in Microsoft Edge Canary version 123, allows users to download and install extensions similar to the desktop experience. While currently in the testing phase, it marks a significant step forward for Edge on Android, potentially attracting users frustrated by the limitations of other mobile browsers.

The news comes as a pleasant surprise for many, considering Chrome’s long-standing dominance in the mobile browser market. However, Microsoft’s aggressive development efforts seem to be paying off, potentially giving users a more customizable and feature-rich browsing experience on Android. So far, the likes of Dark Reader, uBlock Origin and Global Speed are already available to install as browser extensions on Microsoft Edge, suggesting that this feature is likely nearing release in the stable channel.

While specific details about availability of browser extensions are limited, the ability to add features like ad blockers, password managers, and grammar checkers could significantly enhance the Edge experience for Android users. This move opens up exciting possibilities for developers as well, allowing them to expand their reach and cater to a broader mobile audience.

It’s important to note that this is still a beta feature, and its wider availability and finalization remain to be seen. However, it signals Microsoft’s commitment to innovating in the mobile browser space and potentially challenging Chrome’s dominance. I’ve been using Microsoft Edge on my PC for a couple of years now and I love it. But whether this feature will be enough to sway me and other Android users from Chrome remains to be seen, but it undoubtedly makes Edge a more compelling option for those seeking a customizable and feature-rich mobile browsing experience.
