Safaricom has released a new update to its M-Pesa app, introducing version 3.2.0 with a couple of new features and enhancements. The update focuses on two key areas: international airtime purchases and enhanced security.

Send airtime to over 70 countries globally

A standout feature of the new M-Pesa app is the ability to buy airtime for international numbers. Users can now conveniently purchase airtime for friends and family in over 70 countries directly from the app’s home screen. This addition caters to the growing demand for international connectivity and simplifies the process of supporting loved ones abroad. To buy airtime for an international number, launch the M-Pesa app > Airtime > Buy international airtime.

Enhanced security with 2-factor authentication

Prioritizing user security, Safaricom has implemented 2-factor authentication (2FA) in the updated M-Pesa app. This added layer of protection requires users to provide a second verification step, typically a code sent to their mobile device, in addition to their password when signing in. This measure significantly strengthens the app’s security and safeguards users against unauthorized access.

While not explicitly mentioned in the changelog, the update likely includes various bug fixes and performance improvements to enhance the overall user experience. Below is the full changelog:

New in M-Pesa 3.2.0

  • Enhanced security – we’ve added 2 factor authentication to increase security when signing in to the app

  • International airtime – you can now buy airtime globally! From the home screen go to airtime > buy international airtime to purchase airtime from over 70 countries globally.

The updated M-Pesa app v3.2.0 should be rolling out now on both Android and iOS platforms. Be sure to update the app to enjoy the latest features and security enhancements. The new update started rolling out on iOS a week ago, but it’s still not available for me on Android. However, I was able to grab the APK version and install it manually.

With this update, Safaricom continues to solidify M-Pesa’s position as a leading mobile money platform, offering convenience, security and expanded services to its users. The addition of international airtime and 2FA demonstrates Safaricom’s dedication to innovation and customer-centric solutions.
