The P9, Huawei’s hero device for most of 2016 before the Mate 9’s arrival, may no longer be the company’s latest and greatest but that doesn’t mean that it has been forgotten.

According to the company, the device will be updated soon (before Q1 2017 wraps up).

Sadly, though, users of the P9 won’t be treated to the latest version of Huawei’s custom EMUI software, version 5.1. They will instead get version 5.0 which has been around since the Mate 9 debuted last December.

Huawei’s 2017 flagship smartphone, the P10, runs EMUI 5.1.

EMUI 5.0 was Huawei’s biggest software overhaul in years bringing with it features like App Twin (the ability to run two instances of a single app like WhatsApp), bringing back the app drawer, introducing a blue light filter, Huawei Share (a way to share files easily among compatible paired devices by utilizing Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technologies), machine learning technologies to predict user behaviour and so much more.

EMUI 5.1 builds upon that and several few new features of its own like support for the multi-functional home key found on the P10 and the Gallery app’s Highlights tool feature that mimics some of the functionality we have become accustomed to thanks to Google’s Photos app like indexing images and sorting them based on the place and people and creating videos from captured photos and clips.

Other devices getting the Android Nougat update with Emotion UI 5.0 alongside the entire P9 family (P9, P9 Plus and P9 Lite) are the Huawei Mate 8, the Nova and Nova Plus.
