The Huawei Y5 Prime, Huawei Mobile Kenya’s latest smartphone, is now up for pre-order across the country.

This comes after Huawei ran a week-long “price guess” competition in collaboration with the device’s online launch partner, retailer Jumia Kenya, that will see those who correctly guessed the device’s price rewarded with branded merchandise from the Chinese device maker.

According to Huawei, the Y5 Prime 2018 will cost Kshs 9,999.

This puts it within the cross-hairs of the Android Go-powered Tecno Spark 2 which goes for Kshs 11,299 on the same online platform, Jumia. Another device available on Jumia, the Xiaomi Redmi 5A, goes for the same Kshs 9,999.

Online (on Jumia), the pre-order period runs from today, Monday, 9th July, through to Thursday, 12th July, after which the device will be available for purchase to everyone. Offline, in retail stores across the country, the pre-order period runs from today through to Sunday, 15th July ahead of the device’s availability the following Monday.

The device lacks a fingerprint sensor but should, ideally, have a face unlock feature (we can’t verify the feature’s availability, though).

“Huawei Y5 Prime 2018 is designed especially for the young generations who are looking for a chic big screen and comes with a bigger RAM”, reads the press statement from Huawei Kenya announcing the device’s pre-order availability.

I have the device in for review so look out for my thoughts on it in coming days.
