OnePlus isn’t a new name to most avid Android fans here in Kenya. The Chinese company is popular for its “low-cost” devices that are known to pack specs and features matching more expensive phones from the likes of Samsung and Huawei.

This year’s model(s) is out and unlike before, we have two variants to pick from – the standard OnePlus 7 and the premium OnePlus 7 Pro. As usual, Avechi Kenya will bring the two devices these sides of the planet and the retailer has now opened pre-orders for interested buyers.

OnePlus 7 Pro

The premium OnePlus 7 Pro is where all the magic lies. OnePlus took some inspiration from its parent company, Oppo, and went with a motorized pop-up selfie camera in place of a notch up top for housing the front camera like on the standard OnePlus 7. The result is a huge edge-to-edge display screen that OnePlus calls Fluid AMOLED.

Like the 6T and the standard OnePlus 7, the Pro model also has an in-display fingerprint scanner and supports face unlock via the selfie camera. However, OnePlus doesn’t recommend using this form of authentication for durability reasons. Still, the company promises that the motorized camera can go through over 5 years of use without damage even if the selfie shooter is used 150 times a day.

There are three camera lenses on the back, a 4000mAh battery, dual stereo speakers, and so on, but there’s still no 3.5mm audio jack, IP6X rating for dust and water resistance, and wireless charging; features that OnePlus fans keep asking for every year.

Here is a rundown of the specs:

  • 6.67-inch 19.5:9 QHD+ (3140×1440) Fluid AMOLED display, 90Hz refresh rate
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor
  • 6GB or 8GB or 12GB RAM
  • 128GB or 256GB UFS 3.0 storage
  • Tri-lens main camera: 48MP (f/1.6, EIS, OIS)+ 16MP (f/2.2, 117 degrees ultra-wide) + 8MP (telephoto, f/2.4, OIS, 3x zoom)
  • 16MP (f/2.0) motorized pop-up selfie camera
  • 4000mAh battery
  • OxygenOS on top of Android Pie
  • Extras: Bluetooth 5.0, USB 3.1 Type-C, NFC, 30W Warp Charge, NFC, in-display fingerprint scanner, face unlock, a new haptic feedback engine, dual stereo speakers, audio tuned by Dolby Atmos, etc.

To get your hands on one of these, Avechi Kenya wants Kshs 70,999 for the base model; Kshs 79,999 for the midrange 8/256GB model; and Kshs 88,999 for the premium 12/256GB memory option. Pre-orders are open, but shipping begins on May 31st.

OnePlus 7 specs, price and availability

OnePlus 7-4

Essentially, the standard OnePlus 7 is a souped-up OnePlus 6T. The company simply took the 6T and crammed 2019 hardware in there, including the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor, UFS 3.0 storage, and the new 48MP camera on the back, among others.

Here is a quick rundown of the specs:

  • 6.41-inch 19.5:9 FHD+ Optic AMOLED display
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor
  • 6GB or 8GB RAM
  • 128GB or 256GB UFS 3.0 storage
  • Dual-lens main camera: 48MP (f/1.7, EIS, OIS, PDAF) + 5MP (f/2.4, telephoto)
  • Front camera: 16MP (f/2.0, EIS)
  • 3700mAh battery
  • OxygenOS on top of Android Pie
  • Extras: Bluetooth 5.0, in-display fingerprint scanner, face unlock, USB 3.1 Type-C, 20W fast charging, NFC, a new haptic feedback engine, dual stereo speakers, audio tuned by Dolby Atmos, etc.

Avechi has only listed the 8/256GB variant of the standard OnePlus 7, so we don’t know if the base model will also be available. Also, unlike the Pro variant, the retailer isn’t revealing the price of the standard model, perhaps because its availability is scheduled to arrive on June 20th. Even so, it should be cheaper than the Pro model when it arrives.

While its true Avechi has always been the one-stop shop for OnePlus devices, you might want to make inquiries about the availability of either phone before committing your hard-earned money to this course.
