Sony’s smartphone sales may be in the red but it doesn’t mean that the Japanese are about to hang up their boots any time soon. The company is still making smartphones and, importantly, still has plans for the ones it currently sells.
According to a statement from the company, its latest flagship smartphone, the supertall Xperia 1 and a recent release, the Xperia 5, will headline its Android 10 rollout plans. The duo is set to be the first of Sony smartphones to run on Android 10 when they receive their updates this December.
Other devices, namely the Xperia 10, Xperia 10 Plus, Xperia XZ2, Xperia XZ2 Compact, Xperia XZ2 Premium and the Xperia XZ3, will receive their Android 10 updates in the new year.
While this is good news for owners of the aforementioned devices, it’s likely to rub users of the Xperia XZ1 series the wrong way. The Android 9 Pie update that series received around this time last year is likely to be its last major operating system upgrade. Given that it is well past its standard 2-year support window (they were launched in August 2017 for crying out loud), it may be time to expect the inevitable: its mortality is almost here.
