Here’s where you can buy the Huawei Y9 2019 in Kenya

Users of the Huawei Y9 Prime 2019, like yours truly, may be all smiles as they continue unwrapping the goodies that Android 10 delivered to them but that is not exactly the case for users of another device that has a name that sounds similar it.

When Huawei made public the list of devices it was updating to EMUI 10, the custom software it is rolling out that brings Android 10 to the tens of millions of devices in the hands of its users around the world, there was a notable omission. The company’s popular entry-level and lower mid-range Y-series smartphones were a glaring omission from the list. Only the Y9 Prime 2019 made the cut.

While most of the devices in the Y series lineup bar the Y9s and Y9 Prime 2019 can easily be dismissed for either having been well past their officially sanctioned support window or packing hardware that would negate any gains a software upgrade would bring, that can’t be said of the Huawei Y9 2019.

Launched in Kenya in October 2018, the Huawei Y9 2019 remains well within the standard 2-year window that Android device makers are generally expected to adhere to when it comes to providing support, especially in the updates department. As such, its omission from the list of devices whose users could look forward to an update in coming days and weeks was – and still remains – rather surprising.

Some users even took it upon themselves to petition the company to release the EMUI 10 update for their devices. On change.org, where the petition has been posted, they are well on their way towards achieving the 2,500 signatures they require to challenge the powers that be in Shenzhen.

In an interesting twist, the company’s main Twitter account confirmed that the device is on course to receive its Android 10 update, without providing further details on the timelines.

It remains to be seen if the company will honour its word or it was just paying lip service to yet another nagging customer on social media.
