We have seen Huawei update most of its flagship smartphones from the past 2 years and a host of many other budget devices thereby increasing the number that are currently running on EMUI 10, its latest Android overlay.
Given the way Android devices are updated, there’s been no hope for those holding on to their dated Huawei Mate 9 smartphones that the device would see any Android 10 love.
That, however, appears to not be the case according to a recent reply on Instagram by the Huawei Mobile Services team to a customer query.
According to Huawei, the EMUI 10 update for the device, which brings with it Android 10, is currently under “active development and testing”.
The Huawei Mate 9 was released in early November 2016 at an event in Munich, Germany powered by EMUI 5.0 with Android 7.0, Nougat, doing its magic behind the scenes.
EMUI 5, back then, was a huge revamp of the dated interface it was replacing and brought with it several new features including Huawei Share, App Twin among others.
Since then, the device has been upgraded to Android 8.0, Oreo and Android 9 Pie.
Long past its obligatory 2-year software support window and the oft-deployed 2 major software upgrades plan, it will be very impressive if Huawei makes good its word to upgrade the indefatigable Mate 9 to Android 10. Of course, if and when that happens, we can expect that it will be the last time we will be talking about the device and software updates in the same breath.
4 years since it hit the market, the Huawei Mate 9 may no longer be the shiniest thing that users are drooling over, with able successors like the Mate 10, 20 and 30 series that have since pushed the boundaries of mobile technology as we know it, but it continues to offer satisfactory performance, battery life and still delivers on the camera front. What a legacy!
UPDATE: 6th February, 2020
Huawei has confirmed that the Mate 9 won’t be getting an Android 10 update
