Tecno launches Camon 18 series in Kenya: here’s what you need to know
FacebookTwitterWhatsApp

At an event on October 25, Tecno took the wraps off its Camon 18 lineup in the Kenyan market.

The Tecno Camon 18 series, as we had earlier reported, comprises the standard Tecno Camon 18 (which we currently have in for review – watch our unboxing and early impressions here), the Tecno Camon 18P and the headliner, the Tecno Camon 18 Premier.

Camon 18 Premier

The Camon 18 Premier features a large 6.67-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display with 120Hz refresh rate, 8GB RAM and 256GB internal storage. It has a 64-megapixel lens headlining its rear triple camera setup that includes a gimbal camera that Tecno is touting as the best-in-class. The front gets a 32-megapixel shooter.

Other specifications include a 4,750mAh battery that supports 33W fast charging. There is also the promise of Android 12 “soon” – the device arrives running on Android 11 with the latest version of Tecno’s custom overlay, HiOS, running atop. You can have a glimpse of HiOS 8 here.

The Tecno Camon 18P is the middle child of the Camon 18 series.

It sees its optics scaled down from those of the premier to a 16-megapixel front-facing camera and a 48-megapixel headlining back lens.

It gets the Extreme Performance version of the Helio G96 chipset on the Premier and half the onboard storage (128GB).

It, however, gets a slightly bigger battery (5,000mAh), the same fast charge rating (33W) and the same display unit and refresh rate as the Premier, making it a very attractive offering to those not willing or who can’t measure up to the Camon 18 Premier’s higher asking price (see details below).

Camon 18

This is the entry-level model of the Camon 18 lineup. This is interesting because one would expect that the device that gets to keep the range’s name would be the middle one. Not in this case.

It keeps the tri-camera setup of its siblings but, as expected, not to the Premier’s level. It has the same cameras as the 18P.

It keeps the same storage capacity, battery and display as the 18P but with some slight tweaks and adjustments to justify its position in the hierarchy. The 128GB onboard storage is paired with just 4GB RAM, the 5,000mAh battery gets to benefit from just 18W fast charging and the display’s high refresh rate is capped at 90Hz. It also gets a totally different chipset, the MediaTek Helio G88 Extreme Performance.

Pricing and availability

Pricing for the three devices is as follows:

  • Tecno Camon 18: Kshs 22,199
  • Tecno Camon 18P: Kshs 27,699
  • Tecno Camon 18 Premier: Kshs 39,099
