Telegram’s latest update finally brings global chat themes to Android

Version 8.3 of messaging application Telegram Messenger is currently rolling out to users of both Android and iOS devices.

Top on the list of the newly added features is one that has been available to iOS device users but still missing in action on the Android version of the app: global chat themes.

These, according to Telegram, are now available in the latest version of the app.

There are currently only 8 themes available and how these work is that they change the background of the chat window with an option for both parties in a conversation to agree on a particular theme for their chat. The thinking around this, according to Telegram, is that users are able to easily differentiate between chats e.g. work/business-related conversations and personal messages. All of the available themes come with a night and day version with either being applied based on the device or app-specific settings on the same.

Telegram is promising more themes down the line. Maybe even make this a thing with seasonal one? A Christmas theme would be nice, for instance.

To set up chat themes on Android, tap ⋮ > Change Colors. Easy as that.

It is not just chat themes alone that are making their way to version 8.3 of the Telegram. There are other new features as well.

By going to Group or Channel Info page > Group / Channel Type > Restrict Saving Content group and/or channel admins can restrict the sharing/forwarding of content outside their groups and/or channels as well as the saving of any media shared there and the taking of screenshots. This is a great option to have since, for groups and channels that would like to keep the content and any information shared there exclusive to the members, they can do so. Similarly, those that would want to gain from new members and subscribers when messages and media content are forwarded can keep their content open for such.

Tapping the date bar that pops up as one scrolls through chats in a person-to-person conversation will now bring up a calendar view that allows users to delete old chats by date.

“Clearing history by date currently only works in one-on-one chats, but messages in any chat can be set to auto-delete one day, week, or month after sending,” notes Telegram in a blog post.

When posting in a public group, individuals who also manage Telegram channels will have the option of posting as “that channel” instead of as their own personal Telegram profiles/accounts.

Another feature addition that will be of interest to many, especially group admins is this one whereby anyone requesting to join the groups they manage gets to know who they are when they respond to join requests and allows them room to prod the prospective users further.
