The wearables market in Kenya doesn’t get the most attention, but this hasn’t stopped Samsung and other vendors from availing a few of their smartwatches and wearables in the local market. While it remains to be seen whether Xiaomi will release the Watch 2 Pro to Kenya, you can already get your hands on several models of Samsung’s Galaxy Watch series.
The latest of them all, the Galaxy Watch 6, is already available to buy locally. And so are the Galaxy Watch 5 and even the aging Galaxy Watch 4. All three models have Google’s Wear OS 4 running the show, with the Watch 4 having bagged the update a little over a month ago.
Still, Galaxy Watch 6, Watch 5 and Watch 4 owners have had to wait for a separate update to enable support for one of the most basic Google apps on Wear OS 4. Google had promised to bring more apps to Wear OS back at last year’s launch, so it’s great to see the company living up to their word despite their rugged history with keeping promises.
Support for the Google Calendar app comes shortly after the Gmail app also became available to download on Wear OS devices. And the hope is that Google will keep adding more apos so that 3rd-party devs can borrow a leaf and jump on board.
Once installed, you should be able to see monthly events and tasks from Google Tasks directly from your wrist. The app also lets you delete events and tasks right from the watch. Using the “Next Event” and “Next Tasks” tiles, you can also easily mark events and tasks as completed. You also get a “Next Event” watch face complication.
The Google Calendar app for Wear OS is available to download and install for free on the Google Play Store.
