The FindMyIDKe app, currently in closed beta testing, could easily become the ultimate lost and found app for Kenyans.

Losing an ID, driver’s license, or passport is a nightmare for many Kenyans. But now, a new app aims to make that fear a thing of the past. Enter FindMyIDKe — a tool developed by Kenyan software developer Robinson Thairu to simplify the search for lost items across Kenya. Currently in closed beta testing, this innovative app promises to bring together those who’ve lost important documents or valuables and those who may have found them. From national IDs to treasured watches, FindMyIDKe has you covered.

An answer to high replacement fees

When the Kenyan government recently announced a fee of Kshs 1,000 for replacing lost IDs, one software developer decided to take action. This app is their answer, a digital solution to help Kenyans avoid the replacement process altogether. By connecting people who’ve lost items with those who’ve found them, FindMyIDKe aims to build a collaborative, community-driven solution for recovering lost valuables.

So, how does the FindMyIDKe app work?

Once you’ve been accepted as a beta tester, getting started on FindMyIDKe is easy. After downloading the app from the Google Play Store, a simple sign-up process asks for your email and name. You can add your phone number at a later time. My initial attempt to sign up was met with an error, but after I shared my woes with the app’s developer on X, I was clear to get going in a few minutes. Below is the error I got when signing up.

Once inside the app, the dashboard, designed with simplicity in mind, opens with a search bar at the top where you can quickly look up lost or found items. There’s also a Quick Actions section featuring six options — ID Cards, Documents, Health Cards, Licenses, Passports, and “More Items” for other valuables like phones, wallets, bags, birth certificates, keys, books, headphones, watches, cameras, glasses, and even jewelry. The app keeps users informed with a Recently Found section, displaying items reported recently.

At the bottom of the screen, three tabs make navigation a breeze: a Home tab, a Chat tab for communicating with other users, and a Settings tab. The chat feature is especially handy, allowing users to connect directly with someone who may have found their missing item.

A welcoming design for all

FindMyIDKe’s design is both functional and inviting. The home page feels open, with clean, well-organized sections. Quick actions allow users to instantly tap on the type of item they’re looking for, making it simple for even the least tech-savvy users to find what they need. I hope the developer adds an option to customize the Quick Actions section as well. In the Settings tab, users can manage their profile, access privacy policies, and find support options — everything you need in one place. For fans of dark mode like yours truly, I hoped to see an option for this in the settings menu, but I didn’t. This should be an easy add in the future, though.

In my first impressions of the FindMyIDKe app, I found it so straightforward. Losing an ID is such a hassle, but this app makes it feel manageable. I can easily check if someone found it without having to go through endless steps. And yeah, the chat feature is also a welcome idea so that I can easily chat with the person who found the lost item and perhaps arrange how to get it back.

Features tailored for safety and convenience

Beyond simply listing found items, FindMyIDKe has some well-thought-out features that add to its convenience and security. For instance, when someone reports a lost document or finds one, the app has a user verification process to ensure both parties are genuine. This added layer of security makes the app a safe space for connecting and retrieving lost items.

In addition to documents, the app is branching out to cover a broader range of items: birth certificates, keys, headphones, glasses, cameras, and even jewelry. It’s more than just a document tracker — it’s a digital lost and found for all your essentials. Think of it as the Kenyan version of Google’s Find My Device network, but this one is community-driven.

As part of the beta testing program, users are encouraged to submit feedback on anything from ease of navigation to the accuracy of search results. The FindMyIDKe team is committed to refining the app and making adjustments based on real user experiences to deliver the best possible solution for Kenyans. Feedback can be shared directly in the app or through social media on X.

Can’t wait? Visit LostnFoundKe.com

For those who can’t access the beta version yet, FindMyIDKe has also launched a website: LostnFoundKe.com. This online platform provides a taste of what the app offers, helping Kenyans search for lost items while the app is being fine-tuned for a full public launch.

With the FindMyIDKe app, losing an item doesn’t have to mean it’s gone forever. This app brings a fresh approach to item recovery, using technology to support a collaborative Kenyan community. So next time you misplace your ID, phone, or even your favorite pair of sunglasses, FindMyIDKe might just help you reunite with them.

Stay tuned for the app’s full launch and become part of a movement to make lost and found easier, faster, and friendlier for all.
