Lost your phone, wallet or keys? Google’s revamped ‘Find My Device’ network has you covered

The new Find My Device network will also track your Android phone even when it's powered off or offline.

Google has launched an upgrade to its Find My Device network, giving Android users unprecedented peace of mind when it comes to locating misplaced items (or even stolen ones). Here’s how this revamped system makes finding lost belongings easier than ever:

1. Find offline and even powered-off devices

The new Find My Device network harnesses the power of over a billion Android devices worldwide, allowing you to ring your device or view its last known location even when offline – perfect for those times when your phone slips behind the couch cushions. It gets even better for Pixel 8 and 8 Pro owners, as Google’s specialized Pixel hardware allows for locating these phones even when powered-off. While this function cannot be passed on to other existing phones since it relies on special hardware, you can be sure future Android phones will ship with some sort of upgrade that enables tracking them when powered-off.

2. Track down everyday items with Bluetooth tags

Starting in May, the Find My Device app will seamlessly integrate with Bluetooth tracker tags from brands like Chipolo and Pebblebee. This should come in handy for those who often misplace keys, wallet, or even luggage. Next time, simply attach a tracker from any supported brand and the app will help you locate them. Additionally, Google has built-in alerts to notify you of any unknown trackers that might be following you, a vital safety feature.

The number of supported brands is obviously still small at the moment, but expect players like Xiaomi, Tecno, Infinix, Oppo and many others to join the party with their own take on Bluetooth trackers. I bet we’ll have several options by the end of the year.

3. Pinpoint items with the “Find nearby” feature

Lost something close to home but can’t quite pinpoint it? The new “Find nearby” button will be your savior. Google says Find nearby feature helps you zero in on the exact location, even for Bluetooth-equipped items like your wallet or keys (when tags are supported).

4. Get location help from your Google Nest devices

If you own Nest devices, Find My Device now uses them as reference points. If you know your item is somewhere around the house, the app will show its location in relation to your Nest devices, helping you narrow down the search.

5. Share tracking with friends and family

The new Find My Device now allows you to share accessory tracking with others. Lost the house keys? Simply share them in the app with your roommate or partner so everyone can help locate the missing item.

Google says that this powerful network is designed with security as a top priority. Location data is encrypted end-to-end, and aggregated location reporting helps prevent unwanted tracking. Granted, you’ll be in charge of the devices on the Find My Device network.

The new Find My Device network provides a reassuring safety net for easily misplaced items and potentially stolen devices. If you’re an Android user (supports Android 9 and newer versions), FMDN is ready to make those stressful “where did I put it?” moments a thing of the past.
