Phone call scams impersonating Safaricom are unfortunately a common occurrence in Kenya, leaving many victims defrauded of their hard-earned money. While Safaricom has resources to help you identify official numbers, it’s easy to slip up in the heat of the moment. That’s why Safaricom has introduced a new tool directly within the MySafaricom app to help you check and verify if the number calling you is actually from Safaricom customer care or not.
Before we dive into the tool, remember these common red flags of fraudulent callers:
- Urgent requests: Scammers create a sense of urgency to rush your decisions.
- M-PESA PIN requests: Safaricom representatives will never ask for your PIN.
- Threats or promises: Fake promotions or threats to suspend your line are common tactics.
With that out of the way, here’s how to check and verify if the person calling you claiming to be from Safaricom is actually telling the truth or not. You must be using the MySafaricom app for this to work. If not installed, you can get it for free from the Google Play Store.
- Open MySafaricom app and tap on the “Account” icon in the bottom right corner.
- Next, tap on the dedicated “Report Fraud” section.
- From the four options that show up, select “Check if Safaricom is calling” and tap on “Next” to proceed and verify if the number calling you is a genuine Safaricom representative.
- Enter the number in question in the next screen and tap on “Submit.”
Once you submit the request, the app will immediately confirm whether the number is official or a scam. If the number isn’t Safaricom, report it immediately within the same section of the app by selecting the “Report a Conman” option.
Additional safety tips:
- Official Safaricom number: The only genuine Safaricom customer care number is 0722 000 000. Save it in your contacts if you must. The rest must be treated as scam until proven otherwise.
- Never share your personal info: Don’t give out your M-PESA PIN, ID number, or other sensitive information over the phone.
- Hang up and verify: If something feels off, hang up and contact Safaricom directly through their official channels.
By being vigilant, using the MySafaricom app’s tools, and reporting suspicious activity, you’ll not only be safeguarding yourself, but also others from these fraudulent schemes. Stay safe!
