As an Android user, I’ve often observed a frustrating trend: many apps and games debut on iOS long before making their way to our platform. This pattern persisted with X’s (formerly Twitter) AI chatbot, Grok. In December 2024, xAI, the company behind Grok, released standalone web and iOS apps, initially limited to users in Australia, and later made available worldwide in January 2025.
Meanwhile, Android users were left waiting, with no clear timeline for when we might gain access.
In early February 2025, there was a glimmer of hope: the Grok Android app appeared on the Google Play Store, but only for pre-registration in the US. Beta testing commenced in select countries, including Australia, Canada, India, the Philippines, and Saudi Arabia.
Kenya, however, was notably absent from this list, leaving many of us wondering when we’d have the opportunity to experience Grok firsthand. When I checked for the app’s availability on the Play Store a couple of weeks ago, this is what I got:
Today, that moment has finally arrived. Grok has expanded its pre-registration on Android to more regions, and I’m thrilled to report that Kenya is now included.
Eager to explore Grok’s capabilities, I promptly visited the Play Store and submitted my interest. The app’s page currently indicates that it’s “coming soon,” but no specific release date has been provided. While it’s encouraging to see Kenya joining the roster of countries with access to Grok, the lack of a definitive launch date leaves us in a familiar state of anticipation.
Grok, developed by xAI, offers a suite of features designed to enhance user experience. These include text responses, image generation, and real-time information sourced from X. Notably, the app is free to use and doesn’t require users to sign in, although linking it to your X account can provide a more personalized experience.
The delayed rollout of the Android app, especially when the iOS version has been operational for months, raises questions about the strategy behind such staggered releases. In a competitive landscape filled with AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Gemini, timing is crucial. Android users form a significant portion of the global smartphone market, and delayed access can lead to missed opportunities for user engagement and feedback.
Despite these concerns, the expansion of Grok’s pre-registration to Kenya is a positive development. It signifies that the broader rollout is imminent. While the exact launch date remains uncertain, the pre-registration option ensures that interested users will be notified promptly once the app becomes available.
