TECNO is back at it again. After making waves with the SPARK Slim — the world’s slimmest smartphone — the company has now turned its sights on the PC market with an even bolder move. At MWC 2025 in Barcelona, TECNO unveiled the MEGABOOK S14, the industry’s lightest 14-inch OLED laptop, weighing just 899g. But beyond its featherweight build, what really stands out is what’s inside: the powerful Snapdragon X Elite chipset and TECNO’s self-developed AI features.

A bold move with Snapdragon X Elite

Let’s take a moment to appreciate the significance of TECNO’s choice of chipset. Qualcomm has been pushing its Snapdragon X series chips to power the next generation of AI PCs. At CES 2025, the company announced a new entry-level Snapdragon X chip aimed at making Copilot Plus PCs more affordable, with an expected price tag of around $600. I assumed TECNO would take this route given its history of delivering budget-friendly devices.

But TECNO had other plans. Instead of opting for the cheaper Snapdragon X variant, the company went all-in on the Snapdragon X Elite, a high-performance chip built for AI-driven tasks and serious multitasking. This is a major statement from TECNO — one that suggests they’re not just playing in the budget segment anymore. They want a slice of the premium AI PC market, and they’re willing to take big swings to get it.

AI-powered productivity and creativity

The MEGABOOK S14 isn’t just about raw power; it’s also packed with AI-driven features designed to boost productivity and creativity. TECNO AI is integrated into the system, offering offline functionality and seamless cross-device connectivity with TECNO smartphones and MEGAPAD tablets.

Some of the standout AI capabilities include:

  • AI gallery: Organizes photos, creates smart albums, and allows text and voice searches — all without needing an internet connection.
  • Ella AI assistant: Helps with scheduling, task management, and device connectivity.
  • AI PPT generator: Automatically generates PowerPoint presentations based on prompts.
  • AI drawing & meeting assistant: Provides offline meeting transcription with speaker identification, multilingual support, and summaries.
  • Personal GPT functions: Offers local knowledge bases, source tracing, and text translation.

OLED display and external graphics dock

As TECNO’s first OLED laptop, the MEGABOOK S14 boasts a 2.8K high-resolution screen with a 120Hz refresh rate. This means users can expect deep blacks, vibrant colors, and an overall immersive viewing experience — whether they’re working on creative projects or enjoying entertainment.

Gamers and creative professionals will also appreciate the external graphics dock, which supports powerful NVIDIA GPUs. This means that while the laptop is designed for ultra-portability, it can still be transformed into a high-performance machine when needed.

What it means for Kenya

Kenyan consumers are no strangers to TECNO’s aggressive push into premium devices. From the Phantom V series to the Spark Slim, the company has been inching away from its ultra-budget identity. However, TECNO laptops haven’t had the same impact in Kenya as their smartphones. With the MEGABOOK S14, TECNO is positioning itself as a serious contender in the AI PC space, but pricing will be key.

Arm-powered laptops remain rare in Kenya, and those that exist tend to be expensive. If TECNO can keep the MEGABOOK S14 competitively priced while delivering on performance and AI capabilities, it could have a winner on its hands. For now, the biggest question remains: will Kenyan consumers embrace TECNO in the laptop space the same way they have in smartphones? Time will tell.
