After generating a lot of buzz last year with its budget Y series smartphone lineup, Huawei Kenya is starting the year on a high. The company has today officially launched its latest budget smartphone, the Huawei Y7 Prime 2019.
As the name insinuates, this is the deserved upgrade to last year’s Y7 Prime 2018. Like the rest of the Huawei Y series, the Y7 Prime 2019 is targeted at the youthful Kenyan who has a craving for more features at a budget price.
“Huawei Y7 Prime 2019 is made for today’s dynamic youth who are deeply engaged with the social media culture,” Steven Li, the head of mobile for the Eastern Africa region is quoted saying at the Nairobi launch.
The Y7 Prime 2019 comes on the back of two contrasting releases by the Chinese device maker.
The Huawei Y9 2019, launched towards the end of last year, costs more than it and packs more of the same software features but with a superior hardware base and performance to guarantee the price difference. The Huawei Y5 Lite 2018, launched almost at the turn of the year, focuses on providing first-time smartphone users with the Huawei experience, trading the camera prowess of its superior siblings for a bearable performance thanks to Android Go while maintaining the same style and design that the series has come to be known for.
With the Y7 Prime 2019, Huawei is bringing a lot of the features and improvements found on its more premium devices that many admire from afar, to the budget segment. For instance, there’s the shift to a “smaller” notch which Huawei is calling dewdrop design (others call it teardrop). Then there are Artificial Intelligence smarts that are the hallmark of Huawei’s Mate and P series smartphones with roving control ranging from the beefy battery unit on the device to the one feature that Huawei is banking on to sell the device: the camera.
Like the Y7 Prime 2018, the Y7 Prime 2019 starts selling at under Kshs 20,000, a sweet spot that sees several other devices from rivals priced similarly.
Starting today all the way to February 7th, Kenyans can pre-order the Huawei Y7 Prime 2019 as well as in Huawei brand shops and selected stores countrywide. The device costs Kshs 17,999. It becomes available on Friday, February 8th.
With February being the month of love, buyers also have a choice to order the (Coral) red colour variant of the Huawei Y7 2019 in addition to the Aurora Blue (like the unit in our possession) and Midnight Black colour options.
Those who pre-order the Huawei Y7 Prime 2019 at the said stores will get a gift hamper from Huawei and will be entered into a draw from where they stand to win a 40-inch television, a Huawei Band 2 wearable, among others.
