Huawei’s latest budget smartphone in the Kenyan market, the Huawei Y7 Prime 2019, has been around for a while now. Well, at least if we are considering its official launch.
It is half a month since the device was officially launched, on January 31st. However, as fate would have it, its market availability, then scheduled for February 8th, would be pushed back by 5 more days to see it debut in the market on February 14th, Valentines Day.
That development was important because Huawei has positioned the Coral Red colour variant as the ultimate lover’s phone.
On the same day, the Huawei Y7 Prime 2019 also became available in Safaricom’s retail stores across the country, adding to the over 30 other independent retail outlets where interested buyers can purchase the device.
What many will be quick to note, however, is the increase in price. The Huawei Y7 Prime 2019 is going for Kshs 1,000 more at Safaricom outlets (Kshs 18,999) than one can find it elsewhere (at the recommended retail price of Kshs 17,999).
This is also bearing in mind that the variant being sold by Safaricom is likely to be a single-SIM model given the network operator’s strict stance on dual-SIM devices. We cannot verify that that is the case at this time, though.
This is not the first time that we are seeing such a case. Things played out pretty much the same way last month when Tecno’s Camon 11 started selling in Safaricom shops.
Remember that the recommended retail price of the Y7 Prime 2019 is already Kshs 1,000 more than the starting price of the device’s predecessor, the Y7 Prime 2018. In this case, though, the added features and improved specifications may justify the minor increment.
What justifies the higher markup at Safaricom shops?
Safaricom is also throwing in a 2GB free data offer to anyone who buys the device through its retail store network.
In addition to physical stores, the Huawei Y7 Prime 2019 can also be bought online through Jumia and Kilimall.
