Huawei has today unveiled yet another member of its “budget” Y series of smartphones.

The Huawei Y9s, is set to start selling in the country at the end of the month.

Pre-orders for the device open on November 22nd and will run all the way to November 28th. The following day, on the 29th, the device will be available for purchase across the country through the various Huawei brand stores and partner outlets.

The Huawei Y9s becomes the third smartphone with the “Y9” name and branding. It follows closely in the footsteps of the Huawei Y9 2019 launched late last year and the Huawei Y9 Prime 2019 made available locally about half a year ago.

However, unlike the duo, it stands out thanks to its pricing: Kshs 32,000.

This effectively makes it the most pricey Huawei Y-series device and is a departure from the Kshs 25,000 ceiling the company had kept to in past releases.

The higher pricing results in the most amount of memory that we have ever witnessed on a Y-series device.

The Huawei Y9s’ feature set is a direct match to that of the recently released Huawei P30 Lite New Edition.

Not only does it pack the same Kirin 710 series silicon that powers the lowest-ranking member of the Huawei P30 family, it also features the same amount of memory and onboard storage: 6GB and 128GB respectively.

Its standout feature, at least according to its maker, is the same triple camera arrangement setup that can be found on the P30 Lite New Edition: a 48-megapixel main sensor, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide angle sensor and a 2-megapixel depth sensor.

The point of departure between the two devices is the battery with the Y9s packing a 4,000mAh unit that towers above the P30 Lite’s.

There are also some key design elements that set the two apart. Where the P30 Lite and every other Y-series device before it with the feature has kept the fingerprint sensor at the back, the Y9s sees it transferred to the side of the device. There’s also the pop-up camera, packing a 24-megapixel sensor, that should be a deserving upgrade to the shooter on the Y9 Prime 2019.

Those who pre-order the device will receive a free pair of branded headphones from Huawei.
