Samsung Electronics East Africa is gearing up to launch one of the company’s most controversial devices, the Galaxy Fold, in Kenya this week.

According to sources and teasers from the company on social media, the Samsung Galaxy Fold will be launched on Thursday, November 14th, in Nairobi.

Up to this point, there are no hints as to what the local pricing of the device will be.

However, in other countries where it has been made available for purchase since its return to the market about 2 months ago, the Samsung Galaxy Fold is going for a whopping $2,000 (an equivalent of almost Kshs 205,000 as per current exchange rates).

Given that expected steep pricing, the Galaxy Fold is likely to be made available in the Kenyan market in limited numbers. We can also expect to see Samsung try to sweeten the deal by offering a number of accessories and other goodies for free to accompany the device.

Samsung announced the Galaxy Fold 9 months ago. However, as fate would have it, the device did not get to go to market as planned after early users of the device, many of them tech reviewers, unearthed several issues that led to their particular units malfunctioning. Samsung recalled those particular units, suspended the impending market launch and went back to the drawing board. The result has been the device that will be available for purchase by Kenyans of means from later this week.

Its design has been tweaked a bit to prevent users from removing a protective film applied on the display. There has also been a strengthening of the screen itself so that the creases that result from the device’s standout folding mechanism aren’t as pronounced. Caps at either end of the screen where it folds (the “hinge”) to plug up any air gaps and prevent dust and other debris from getting trapped have also been introduced.

Tagged by its maker as “the world’s first device with a Dynamic AMOLED Infinity Flex Display”, the Galaxy Fold packs the biggest display that Samsung has ever put on a smartphone: 7.3 inches.

When not spread out “tablet-style”, users can interact with the Samsung Galaxy Fold from its 4.6-inch HD+ secondary “cover” display.

Other features of the device include 6 cameras, for all the practical uses that can be found for them, wireless charging and reverse wireless charging, 12GB RAM, a whopping half-terabyte of storage, a 4,380mAh battery and a Snapdragon 855 processor.

UPDATE

Samsung has pushed the launch by a week to Thursday, November 21st.
