WhatsApp joins elite 5 billion app installs club

WhatsApp multiple devices for one account

Just how popular is WhatsApp? Well, as of the last count, over 1.5 billion of us relied on it to connect us with our friends, family, colleagues and even strangers.

Now, there’s one more feather to add to its already highly decorated cap: the messaging application has now crossed the 5 billion downloads mark on the Google Play Store.

While WhatsApp remains popular in most parts of the world, the role of device makers who pre-install the app on their devices in contributing to this magical 5 billion downloads figure, cannot be downplayed.

By doing so, WhatsApp joins a very rare category of applications on the Google Play Store that are not owned by Google, and thus not part of the permanently pre-installed ones on every device certified for Google Play services, that has over 5 billion downloads.

The main Facebook app from WhatsApp’s parent Facebook is the only other member of that elite club after the app crossed the 5 billion mark in October last year.
