Xiaomi is set to unveil the newest version of its custom Android overlay, MIUI, on April 27th. That is Monday, next week.
MIUI 12, as we expect it to be known as, will be coming to replace MIUI 11, which has been available since September 2019.
A month ago, it was revealed that Xiaomi had halted development on MIUI 11. While the company did not explain why it did so, speculation has been rife since then that it did so in order to concentrate its efforts fully on work on the upcoming MIUI 12.
Now, according to postings on social platforms [translation] in China, MIUI 12’s time has arrived and it should be shown off next week. It is then that we will probably get a glimpse of the timelines involved until when most users can get it on their devices and which devices will actually be eligible for the update.
An unofficial application has since sprung up on the Google Play Store that claims to check whether users’ devices are eligible for the upgrade to MIUI 12.
While it may come as a surprise to some that Xiaomi is releasing a new version of MIUI that will still be based on Android 10, just as MIUI 11 was, for longtime Xiaomi watchers, this is not surprising.
Whereas other Android device makers have always timed releases of new versions of their in-house additions to Android to coincide with their global rollouts of Android upgrades, Xiaomi has a long history of going all out on its own and guaranteeing similar features across its entire device portfolio regardless of Android version.
