Tecno set to unveil new Camon 17 series, selfie documentary in tow

What do you when launching phones is too common?

Launch phones, of course, but throw in a documentary perhaps?

That is exactly what Chinese device brand Tecno is reportedly set to do soon.

Ever since some select Kenyan retailers went live with pages of the yet-to-be-launched Tecno Camon 17, we have had our fingers crossed for the imminent announcement of the device.

Now, thanks to what we are learning about the latest variation of Tecno’s camera-centred smartphone series, we can confirm that there is a Pro model as well.

The Tecno Camon 17 Pro is expected to headline the Camon 17 series. It’s standout feature? The cameras, of course. It’s a Camon, after all.

There is a specific emphasis on the front-facing camera as captured in the title of the documentary that will premiere at the same time as the device, Rise of the Selfie. As highlighted by the not-so-discreet name of the film, the documentary will apparently highlight “why the selfie is so central to our perception of ourselves and by extension, the world around us”. Hmm, how apt!

Why is there a huge focus on the selfie? Well, it turns out that, according to some of the latest research available, the prevailing circumstances (a global pandemic) which have us social distancing and pretty much cutting back on most, if not all, of our usual face-to-face interactions, has led to a surge in demand for better experiences when using the front-facing camera. That is even before considering the insane amounts of time spent on video calls these days.

This is not the first time that we are seeing a smartphone maker follow up the announcement and launch of a new device with a documentary. Another Chinese smartphone brand, OnePlus, released a documentary, New Beginnings, with the launch of its budget smartphone, the OnePlus Nord.

What do you reckon are the features of the Tecno Camon 17 Pro?
