Tecno has finally taken the wraps off its Camon 17 series in Kenya.
The series comprises the standard variant, the Camon 17 and a pro model, the Camon 17 Pro. There is also a third variant, the Camon 17P.
The new smartphone series, as was the case with its predecessors, features more focus on the cameras.

The Tecno Camon 17 Pro features 48 and 64-megapixel cameras on the front and back respectively. The exact specifications for the other two devices vary (see here).
At the back, the focus is on producing, among other things, the best photo experience under low-light conditions with the camera’s Super Night feature. On the front, the focus shifts to producing the clearest selfies possible.
Additionally, there are other areas, like the display that have also received some attention.
Sure, you still get an HD+ display like you did on most devices from the Tecno brand last year – and elsewhere in the local budget smartphone segment – if you go for the standard variant, or Full HD if you land the Camon 17 Pro but… There’s a new addition across the board: a high-refresh-rate.
A 90Hz refresh rate and a touch sampling rate that is twice that (180Hz) dot the 6.8-inch “Dot-in” displays of the P and Pro models and the 6.6-inch display of the standard variant.
Last year, the 90Hz refresh rate had been limited to the Camon 16 Premier.
On the battery front, the 5,000mAh sealed can be recharged rapidly at varying rates depending on the model you go with (18W as standard and up to 25W for the Pro model).
Something that we also saw in the Camon series last year, USB Type-C ports, appears to be staying for good, this time around.
The Pro model also features the highest storage capacity we have seen Tecno put in a smartphone so far: 256GB.
Other features include dual speakers on the Pro model, the ability to create timelapses in 4K on the P and Pro models and 2K on the standard variant and HiOS 7.6 across the three devices.

Pricing for the Tecno Camon 17 series starts at Kshs 17,500, the going price for the base model (4GB RAM, 128GB onboard storage). The 6GB RAM model of the Camon 17 is going for Kshs 20,000 locally.
The Tecno Camon 17 Pro costs Kshs 22,800.
It is not clear at this point if the Camon 17P will be made available locally.
