Hot on the heels of its release of the Huawei nova 9 SE, Huawei Mobile Kenya, last week announced the launch of the new Huawei nova Y70 in Kenya.

The device, announced globally back in April, is expected to go on sale in the country on June 24th. Until then, however, interested buyers can start placing their pre-orders on June 17th. Huawei will be giving those who pre-order the device a pair of Bluetooth headsets.

The Huawei nova Y70 marks the first of such devices we are seeing from Huawei as the brand marks a return to regular smartphone releases in the local market after a long hiatus. The new nova Y series is expected to pick up from where the then popular budget Huawei Y series smartphones left – before a crippling ban by former US President Donald Trump’s government saw the brand significantly reduce its presence not just in Kenya and the region but also around the world, as it adjusted to its new reality.

The Huawei nova Y70 packs a 6.75-inch HD+ display, an unspecified chipset, 4GB RAM, 128GB onboard storage (expandable up to 512GB) and a 6,000mAh battery. It has a 48-megapixel headlining image sensor backed by a pair of 5 and 2-megapixel ultra-wide-angle and depth snappers, respectively.

The mammoth battery comes with ready support for Huawei SuperCharge meaning that it can take up 22.5W fast-charging when using the supplied wall adapter and cable combo.

The device runs on EMUI 12 which comes with ready support for Huawei Vision display hardware thereby allowing users with the hardware to switch between the smartphone and the monitor for making video calls, something that is unlikely to be the reality for most Kenyan buyers of the device but which is definitely “nice to have”.

Most importantly, for users, EMU12 means that they get to get their apps and games from the Huawei AppGallery which is front and centre of the Huawei Mobile Services (HMS), Huawei’s own take of similar services offered by Google – Play Services and the Play Store.

The device comes in Pearl White, Crystal Blue, and Midnight Black colours.

It will be going for Kshs 25,000.
