Tecno has taken the wraps off its Camon 20 series in Kenya, after a weeklong pre-order period, at an event in Nairobi last night. It is at that event that we got to hear a statistic that many found mindblowing showing just how dominant Transsion, Tecno’s mother company, had become in the country.
In Kenya, the Chinese brand is offering the standard Camon 20, the Camon 20 Pro and the Camon 20 Premier. The latter two are also offered in their 5G variants.
The devices in the Camon 20 series share the same design language as well as some features and specifications.
For starters, they all rock the same 6.67-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display panel, the same 8GB RAM and the same 256GB internal storage – though there’s a 512GB variant being offered in Kenya for the Premier.
The Camon 20 Pro 5G and Premier 5G rock the same chipset, MediaTek’s Dimensity 8050 while the standard Camon 20 and the 4G variant of the Camon 20 Pro are powered by a Helio G85 chipset from the same maker.
The two devices that headline the Camon 20 series, that is the Camon 20 Pro 5G and the Camon 20 Premier, vary when it comes to the cameras where the Camon 20 Pro 5G goes with a 64-megapixel hero sensor (this is shared across the other Camon 20 series devices bar the Premier model) backed by a pair of 2-megapixel macro and depth sensors. The Premier model, which is the hero device of the series, rocks a 50-megapixel primary sensor with point detection autofocus (PDAF), laser autofocus and optical image stabilization (OIS), a 108-megapixel ultra-wide sensor and a 2-megapixel depth sensor to round up the tri-lens setup. The Pro model also gets OIS on the primary sensor.
The third lens on the 4G Camon 20 Pro and the standard Camon 20 is dropped from the 2-megapixel on the 5G Pro variant in favour of a QVGA unit, the only marked difference between the trio.
On the front, all the devices in the Camon 20 series share a common 32-megapixel front-facing camera.
Optical under-display fingerprint sensors are also available on the top-end duo. Beyond the Pro, the standard Camon 20 and its variants have to make do with side-mounted ones.
The smartphones share a 5,000mAh battery as well. The differentiation comes in the fast charging deployed. The Camon 20 Pro 5G gets the 33W fast charging that the standard Camon 20 and the 4G Camon 20 Pro also get while the Camon 20 Premier 5G gets 45W fast charging.
The devices run Android 13 with Tecno’s HiOS 13 skin overlaid. The Camon 20 Pro is one of the devices whose users can test-drive the upcoming version of Android, Android 14, the best indicator that at least one major version of Android is assured on the smartphones.
Pricing for the devices is as follows:
