WhatsApp users can now send photos in HD on the popular messaging application.
The update, which allows users to do this, is currently rolling out, having started last week and is expected to take up to the next few weeks to reach most of WhatsApp’s over 2 billion users worldwide.
Going by what we saw when the feature was under testing, HD images will be flagged as such using a gear icon, just as is the case on X (formerly Twitter).
HD photos, by WhatsApp standards, are those with 4096 x 2692 pixels. Some level of compression is still to be expected as images won’t be sent in their original resolution even with the HD option on.
By default, all images will be sent in the standard quality (1600 x 1052 pixels) unless specified otherwise.
The feature will be available on all platforms: web/desktop, Android and iOS.
WhatsApp is expected to allow users to send videos in HD as well soon.
