Google Messages users with compatible smartphones are in for a treat as the search giant brings its Gemini AI assistant directly into the messaging app. However, this exciting feature is currently only rolling out to a limited selection of handsets, and that too for beta testers of the app.
At the time of writing, Google has officially confirmed support for the following devices:
- Pixel 6 or later
- Pixel Fold
- Samsung Galaxy S22 or later
- Samsung Galaxy Z Flip or Z Fold
Gemini promises to revamp your messaging experience by leveraging Google’s advanced AI capabilities to help you draft responses, plan events, or find information relevant to your conversation – all without leaving the Google Messages app.
If you own one of the supported devices, you’ll need to join the Google Messages beta program to try out the Gemini integration. Keep in mind that availability is currently rolling out gradually, so even beta testers might need to wait a bit before seeing the option. Luckily, Kenya is among the 165 countries where the feature is currently available.
It’s unclear whether Google plans to extend Gemini support to a wider range of devices in the future. However, the initial focus on high-end Pixel and Samsung smartphones suggests that powerful hardware may be necessary to take full advantage of this AI-powered messaging assistant. But I hope they’ll find a way to make the feature widely available for all Android users and not just select devices.
Of course, there are other conditions to be met, including turning on RCS, being at least 18 years of age, and more. You can check out the details here.
