Owners of the newly-released Redmi Note 13 series smartphones who wish to unlock their device’s bootloader for customization are facing an unexpected hurdle. Attempts to use Xiaomi’s official Mi Unlock tool have been met with a persistent error message stating, “The system is being upgraded. Please try again later.”
After initial silence that led to user frustration (1,2,3,4), Xiaomi has finally issued an official statement acknowledging the issue. The company has confirmed that the problem is not device-specific; instead, the bootloader unlocking system itself is currently undergoing maintenance for the Redmi Note 13 series.
This is not an issue. The bootloader unlocking system is currently under maintenance for this device series. If you try to bind your account in Settings, you will get to see a pop-up: The system is being upgraded. Please try again later.
While Xiaomi’s acknowledgment is a step in the right direction, the extended maintenance period is raising questions. Reports of the error surfaced as early as January, leading users to wonder why routine maintenance would take such an unusually long time. Luckily, frustrated users have found a workaround that seems to bypass this error. It requires downloading and installing the Mi Community app, if not already. You can grab the APK here. Once done, log in to the app and set the region to “Global” and Tap on “Me” > Unlock bootloader > Apply for unlocking and wait for a few hours (may take over 2 hours) to link your Mi Account to the phone.
If this doesn’t work, affected Redmi Note 13 series owners eager to unlock their phone’s bootloader will have to be patient. After all, Xiaomi’s official statement provides reassurance that their devices are not faulty and that the ability to unlock the bootloader will be restored at an unspecified future date.
