Google deletes popular Xiaomi MIUI Downloader & HyperOS Updater app from the Play Store

Xiaomi users have been hit with a frustrating setback as the popular MIUI Downloader & HyperOS Updater app unexpectedly vanished from the Google Play Store. The app, a favorite among Xiaomi enthusiasts for its streamlined MIUI update process, boasted over 100,000 downloads and a strong 4.3 out of 5 user rating in Google’s app store.

The developers behind the app took to their Telegram channel, which has a following of over 200,000 Xiaomi fans, to express their frustration. Their message reads: “Our app has been deleted from the Play Store again. For completely unrelated reasons. Developing apps for Android is stupid.” No further explanation has been provided, leaving users puzzled.

The sudden removal raises questions about Xiaomi’s stance on third-party apps designed to enhance their devices’ user experience. MIUI Downloader & HyperOS Updater provided a convenient way for Xiaomi users to stay on top of the latest software updates, often even before official over-the-air (OTA) rollouts reached their phones. But it’s not the first time Xiaomi has seemingly targeted apps offering additional customization or update management options, including this very same app. While no official statement has been released by Xiaomi, it’s possible that the company is after greater control over how users interact with software updates on their devices. Any attempts to access the app in the Play Store (web) results in the error below:

This move could be seen as a way to discourage users from installing updates before Xiaomi has thoroughly tested their regional variants, potentially leading to compatibility issues if not properly optimized. Another reason could be to limit the use of custom ROMs and alternative builds of MIUI, even if offered through seemingly harmless update apps.

The loss of MIUI Downloader & HyperOS Updater app leaves a void in the market for Xiaomi users who enjoyed the convenience and control it provided. While official update channels remain available, those who sought early access to updates or desired a more streamlined experience will need to seek out alternative solutions, assuming such apps aren’t also targeted for removal.
