Google Play is revamping itself from just a regular old app store into your content concierge with a brand new feature called Collections. Imagine having all your favorite shows, music, games, and even shopping carts in one, easy-to-reach place. That’s the magic that Collections promises.
Think of it as a mini Google Now (remember it?) but for entertainment. You’ll be able to add a widget on your home screen that you can resize to fit your needs. The widget curates content from the apps you already use, like YouTube, Spotify, TikTok, and even streaming apps like Prime Video.
Here’s a sneak peek at what Collections can do in a group of 7 categories, according to 9to5Google:
- Watch: See recommendations from YouTube, TikTok, and your other favorite streaming services in one place.
- Listen: Get up to speed with today’s top hits or discover new jams from Spotify and YouTube Music.
- Read: Dive into ebooks and audiobooks, all neatly organized for easy access.
- Game: Find new gaming adventures from the Play Store or get recommendations from YouTube.
- Food: Only Google Maps is mentioned, but I imagine it will show deals from food delivery apps.
- Shop: You’ll also see active carts and deals from shopping apps right on your widget. Think Jumia, Masoko, and others.
- Social: Catch up on the latest trends with feeds from Reddit, TikTok, X, and more.
Google plans to add even more categories like Health & Fitness, Sports, and Travel in the future. Plus, you might even be able to create your custom collections. The best part? Collections breaks down the walls between different apps. You won’t have to jump through hoops to find what you’re looking for. It’s all there, waiting to be discovered in one beautiful, convenient feed.
The Google Play “Collections” widget is rolling out in the US starting today, but it should become available globally soon.
