Here’s why Posta Kenya is increasing MPost price

Apparently, MPost was just in its pilot phase all this time.

Remember that virtual post office box service, MPost, that used to cost a cool Kshs 400 a year? Well, buckle up because Posta Kenya just shifted gears and cranked the price all the way to Kshs 2,000 for individual accounts and a whopping Kshs 9,450 for corporate honchos.

Naturally, Kenyans, already feeling the pinch of these tough times, weren’t exactly thrilled with this news. Let’s just say Posta Kenya’s social media went from chill zone to war zone faster than you can say “price hike.” The comments section became a symphony of frustration, and Posta Kenya, the wise owls that they are, decided to retreat and regroup.

Also, they deleted the tweet 😄 pic.twitter.com/dD3AYllvzD

In an attempt to clear the air, Posta Kenya came back with a clarification that, well, might not exactly win them a popularity contest, but hey, at least it explains things, right?

Apparently, MPost was just in its pilot phase all this time. Yes, you’ve been beta testing MPost at a small price of Kshs 400 per year. Think of it like training wheels for a fancy new virtual mailbox. Now that the training wheels are off and MPost is all grown up, it gets to graduate to the “big leagues” of pricing – which means aligning itself with the cost of regular old physical post office boxes. You know, the kind that requires actual walls and a roof. Here’s Posta Kenya’s full statement shared on X:

We have noticed some confusion regarding our recent social media announcement about the new MPost charges. We would like to clarify the following:

The MPost virtual box service was initially on a pilot phase. With the successful completion of the pilot, the Postal Corporation of Kenya has now fully integrated this service. As a result, the charges have been aligned with the standard rates of our physical Private Letter Box services:

    • Individual Physical Box: Kshs 2000
    • Corporate Physical Box: Kshs 9450

We apologize to our esteemed customers for any confusion this may have caused and additionally wish to appreciate your understanding and continued support. Should you have any questions or need further clarification, please don’t hesitate to reach out on 0719072600.

Thank you for being a valued part of our community!

So, according to Posta Kenya, the new fees are just MPost following in the footsteps of its physical box brethren. Individual physical boxes set you back Kshs 2,000, and companies cough up Kshs 9,450 – sound familiar?

Whether Kenyans find this explanation as smooth as butter or about as comforting as a lukewarm cup of coffee remains to be seen. But hey, at least the folks at Posta Kenya are offering their apologies for any confusion.

Let’s just hope this price hike doesn’t send the few active MPost users fleeing faster than a snail with a rocket strapped to its shell. According to Business Daily, MPost has 600,000 subscribers, but only 70,000 are actively using the service. I don’t see how this massive price hike helps improve what is already a dire situation.

The BD also reports that this price hike happened with the CA’s blessings.
