Google is finally pushing out the long-awaited Android 14 update to Chromecast with Google TV, marking a significant upgrade for the streaming dongle even after it was discontinued. The update, carrying build number UTTC.241218.004, is a sizable 809MB download that moves the device from Android 12 straight to Android 14.
Originally expected by the end of 2024, this update brings new functionality to the Google TV Streamer Voice Remote, including support for Find My Remote and a Customizable Button. These features were initially introduced with the standalone remote accessory, and now, users who purchased it can finally make full use of them.
Beyond feature additions, the update also delivers a security patch upgrade from November 2024 to January 2025, along with unspecified “System Stability and Improvements.” Below is a screengrab of the full changelog:
It remains uncertain whether this will be the final major OS update for Chromecast with Google TV. While Google has officially pulled the dongle from its store, smaller updates are still expected in the future. In 2024 alone, Google released eight updates for the Chromecast, and with this being the second one in 2025, the company is still maintaining some level of support for existing users.
I have personally received the Android 14 update on my Chromecast with Google TV, confirming its availability for users. If you own the device and haven’t updated yet, you can check for the update by navigating to Settings > System > About > System update.
With this rollout, Chromecast with Google TV gets a fresh lease on life, but whether Google has more surprises in store for its streaming hardware remains to be seen.
