My kind and I will know that Oppo Reno 10x Zoom was first unveiled in China in April 2019. The phone has since started selling in several more countries and the latest to join the party is Kenya, more than three months later.
Oppo Kenya unveiled the Reno with 10x hybrid zoom earlier this week. To arrive at this incredible zooming feature, the company went for software while the periscope lens gives you 5x optical zoom. While other markets also get a standard edition of the Reno, it seems we’ll have to settle for the 10x Zoom Edition.
Even so, we are getting the crème de la crème of the Reno series. It has a Gorilla Glass 6-protected 6.6-inch AMOLED 1080p display that is nearly full screen but for the tiny chin at the bottom thus accounting for a crazy 93.1% screen-to-body ratio. The display screen houses the fingerprint scanner. Like the Oppo F11 Pro, the Reno 10x Zoom also ditches the notch or punch hole design for the selfie camera.
Instead, you get a wedge-shaped rising camera that pops up from the side rather than the middle as seen on the F11 Pro, Huawei Y9 Prime 2019, OnePlus 7 Pro, Xiaomi Mi 9T and others. The 16MP selfie shooter is located at the tallest end, but even so, the question of durability will always be there.
Still on photography, the back panel has three lenses. The main shooter is a 48MP unit allied to a 13MP periscope zoom lens. For a wider field of view, there’s an 8MP unit. The usuals like PDAF/Laser AF, OIS, and dual-LED flash are also on board.
Considering the Oppo Reno 10x Zoom is a flagship device, it’s powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 SoC, 6GB/8GB RAM, 128GB/256GB storage, a 4065mAh battery unit and ColorOS 6.0 based on Android 9 Pie. Given that the standard Oppo Reno already joined Android Q beta, it shouldn’t be long before the 10x Zoom Edition also joins the party.
Other specs include Bluetooth 5.0, USB-C, OTG, NFC, and Faiba 4G support, 20W VOOC Fast Charging, among others. Oh, and there’s no 3.5mm audio jack, if you care to know.
As noted, we are getting the premium variant in the Reno series. For a price of Kshs 89,999, you get the Reno 10x Zoom with 8/256GB in any of Ocean Green and Jet Black paint jobs.
Pre-orders are ongoing through all Oppo-branded shops countrywide until July 28, 2019.
