Huawei Y9 2019 and Huawei Y9 Prime 2019 receiving EMUI 9.1 update in Kenya

Starting next month, Huawei is set to start availing the latest version of its Android overlay, EMUI, to the Huawei P30 and P30 Pro, at least in beta.

Based on the upcoming latest version of Android, Q, EMUI 10 is expected to bring with it several new features as well as enhancements to already-existing ones that the company either debuted with the last version of the software (EMUI 9.1) or enhanced from previous versions.

While that is so, there is still a number of smartphones that Huawei has released between over the last few months that were scheduled to get EMUI 9.1 but that hadn’t, yet, made the cut. There’s quite a number of those, going by this list. Heck, even the other member of the P30 family that is still in line to get EMUI 10 at a later date, the Huawei P30 Lite, is yet to receive the upgrade from the EMUI 9.0 it shipped with, to EMUI 9.1.

Going by a recent timeline released by the company, one of the smartphones Huawei was eyeing to upgrade to EMUI 9.1 was the Huawei Y9 2019, arguably the best budget smartphone in the Kenyan market in 2019.

We can now confirm that the device is currently receiving the update in the country.

The update clocks in at a whopping 3.3 GB and it includes the July 2019 security patch.

The Huawei Y9 2019 received its upgrade to Android Pie over 2 months ago and it is that update that brought with it the EMUI 9.0 it has been running.

Also receiving the EMUI 9.1 update in the country is the recently-launched Huawei Y9 Prime 2019. The device, which takes over from the Y9 2019 as one of the best budget smartphones one can buy in Kenya at the moment, has been receiving the update over the last 2 days. Just like the Y9 2019. The unit in our possession got the update yesterday.

The update clocks in at almost 3 GB so you may want to connect to a wireless hotspot or just be aware that you need to spare a similar number of data bundles before initiating the update download process. Since both the Y9 2019 and the Y9 Prime 2019 pack sufficient storage (64GB for the former and 128GB for the latter), sparing some storage for the update should be the least of our worries, no?

In case things go awry during the update process, or for one reason or the other don’t end up liking EMUI 9.1, the latest update to the Y9 Prime 2019 allows users to roll it back.

In addition to the EMUI 9.1 features we have highlighted before like the EROFs file system, and the July security patch, the update also brings with it some amendments to the terms of service of two apps and services: the Huawei weather app as well as HiSearch, Huawei’s own “Finder” app that lets users search for local and online content on their device.

Huawei is set to release EMUI 9.1 updates for the Huawei P30 Lite, Huawei Y5 2019 and Huawei Y6 Prime 2019 any time now (as per this timeline, those devices, and the Y9 2019 as well, should’ve received the update last month).
