Oppo Reno4 and Oppo Watch launched in Kenya

Oppo has unveiled one of its latest smartphones, the Reno4, in Kenya today, as expected.

The device is available for pre-order starting today all the way to Monday, September 28, when it goes on sale countrywide.

The Oppo Reno4 arrives rocking Oppo’s new design for its Reno smartphone series dubbed ‘Reno Glow’, features a slightly slimmer body than its already very thin predecessor (and, as a result, weighs less) while keeping everything else that we loved about the Oppo Reno3 like the proprietary VOOC fast-charging and the impressive cameras, now bundled in a “more 2020” bump at the back and in a dual arrangement on the front.

The device also leverages on the power of Artificial Intelligence to make a difference not just in the camera department, as has mostly been the case on smartphones we have seen in recent years, but also in other areas. There are features like Smart Spying Prevention, Smart AirControl, Smart Rotation and Smart Always-on Display, which take advantage of the same, for instance.

The above-referenced VOOC fast-charging, currently in its fourth iteration, juices up the device by 50% in just 20 minutes.

The Oppo Reno4 arrives running Android 10 with ColorOS 7 (version 7.2) and is set to receive its Android 11 update, which arrives as ColorOS 11, in coming months.

As expected, also joining the Oppo Reno4 in the local market starting today is Oppo’s first smartwatch, named simply as Oppo Watch.

The smartwatch marks the first time in 5 years that we are having a smartwatch running on Google’s wearables platform, wearOS, from a major brand officially available in the country. Only Huawei, with the first generation Huawei Watch in 2015, running what was then known as Android Wear, has offered wearable hardware packing Google’s software in the country previously on an official basis.

The 41mm variant of the Oppo Watch, which is what is available in Kenya, features a 1.6-inch AMOLED display protected from scruffs and scratches by Corning’s Gorilla Glass, a 300mAh battery, 8 gigabytes of storage and is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 3100 chipset. It has Wi-Fi connectivity, splash (water) resistance and connects with compatible smartphones via Bluetooth.

We are currently exploring both the smartphone and the smartwatch and will have our review next week, keep an eye out for that.

The Oppo Reno4 is going for Kshs 40,000 while the Oppo Watch is going for Kshs 24,000.

Those who pre-order the Oppo Reno4 get a free pair of Oppo’s true wireless earbuds, the Enco W11. Normally, a pair of those costs Kshs 5,000. Oppo Kenya made a similar offer to buyers of the Reno4’s predecessor two and a half months ago as part of its Super Brand Month campaign.

Those pre-ordering the Oppo Watch are getting a backpack. Oppo Kenya is offering a Kshs 4,000 discount to those who pre-order both the smartphone and the smartwatch.
