In a list assembled by Counterpoint Research, only two Android smartphones, that is the Galaxy A13 and the Galaxy A03, both developed by Samsung, made the top 10 of the best-selling smartphones of 2022.
The other 8 devices on the list are incredibly all from Apple, with the top three spots being respectively occupied by the iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro Max and the iPhone 14 Pro Max.
The Galaxy A13 came in at a respectable fourth place, with the Galaxy A03 some distance off in 10th place. In total, the 10 top made up 19% of the global smartphone sales for the year in question.
Interestingly, the iPhone 13 sales in first place were two times more than that of the iPhone 13 Pro Max in second. Counterpoint Research explains that major markets such as China, the US, Germany, the UK and France played a big part in driving the sales of the iPhone 13, while a price cut that came to the device when the iPhone 14 was launched helped it to break into the developing countries, further improving the sales.
On the other hand, the Galaxy A13 and Galaxy A03 from Samsung are entry-level devices and are the only non-5G devices on the list. With the sales of the iPhones largely concentrated in developed countries, Counterpoint Research notes that Samsung had a more evenly distributed spread in their sales.
To get into the finer details, the Galaxy A13 performed well in the Caribbean and Latin America regions (CALA) followed by India, while the Galaxy A03 had its best performance in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) followed by CALA.
As to what 2023 holds, Counterpoint Research expects the share of the top 10 smartphones to grow as most OEMs focus on clearing their inventory. Furthermore, the research firm expects manufacturers to make fewer models in a bid to reduce the cannibalization of sales. This has already been seen with the number of active smartphone models in the global market dropping from over 4,200 in 2021 to around 3,600 last year.
