Ross Young is notorious for being the first to get wind of new features from different manufacturers regarding their displays, and he is now back with more news regarding the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4.
In a Tweet from his account @DSCCRoss, Ross claims that the Z Flip 4 will have a larger display than last year’s Z Flip 3 (pictured above). The Z Flip 3 topped out at only 1.9 inches, while the Z Flip only had 1.1 inches for its outer screen. Ross says the new model will be much larger than 2 inches, but he does not specify the exact measurement.
The smaller outer screen for the Z flip models has often been underwhelming, as it limits the functionalities that can be incorporated into it. From the first Z Flip, this outer screen has slowly been increased with each model, but there is still room for improvement.
The Razr 5G from Motorola, for instance, has a larger cover display at 2.7 inches. This makes the phone more useful even when it is folded, as the screen can be used a lot more compared to the smaller display on Samsung Flip phones. Furthermore, the larger screen on the Razr 5G makes it more convenient as a camera monitor for taking quick selfies.
At its current state, the Galaxy Flip phones are still a niche product with a very premium price tag. Their main benefits remain the compact size when folded, rather than the larger screen estate, as is the case in the Galaxy Fold devices.
Increasing the size of the outer screen, and making it more useful might be what finally turns the Flip devices into mainstream smartphones as, currently, 99% of the Z Flip use cases are doing the same things in the same way as standard smartphones with the traditional displays. There is also the small matter of the hefty price but we will overlook it, for now.
Still on the Galaxy Z Flip 4 news, a different rumour, but not from Ross Young claims that the new model will also be getting a boost in its battery capacity.
The Galaxy Z Flip 3 only shipped with a battery rated at 3,300 mAh, and the Z Flip 4 will reportedly add 100 mAh to it, bringing the total to 3,400 mAh.
These battery capacities are still small by modern smartphone standards, but the nature of the folding phones make it that larger bricks can not be fitted unless someone figures out how to make a battery that can bend.
With the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ also rumoured to be packed in the Galaxy Z Flip 4, it will be interesting to see the kind of battery life the device will have. But one thing is for certain, the Z Flip 4 will sell like hotcakes regardless of the battery life.
