Xiaomi Redmi Note 11 gets Android 12 update

The Redmi Note 11 series from Xiaomi was released in Kenya and the global market earlier in the year and have rightly grown in popularity due to its affordable price and decent performance, as discussed in our review.

However, despite the series rocking MIUI version 13, the latest custom UI from Xiaomi, the underlying OS was still Android 11 rather than the more recent Android 12.

With Android 13 expected to be released later in the year, Xiaomi is still playing catch-up with the Redmi Note 11 series as they have only just started rolling the Android 12 update to a few users first. The series is still expected to receive an Android 13 update, but given Xiaomi’s lacklustre pace, this will likely happen in the middle of 2023 or thereabouts.

The update named MIUI 13.0.2.0 SGCMIXM is 2.7 GB in size and will bring the security patch level for the Redmi Note 11 and Redmi Note 11 NFC to June 2022.

Aside from updating the device’s security patch and fixing privacy vulnerabilities, Xiaomi really does not really go into the nitty-gritty of what the OS update brings. Although they do mention that the update will introduce some optimizations including enhanced accessibility for the Phone, Clock and Weather app, while Mind map nodes are more convenient and intuitive after the upgrade.

While you may not get a notification that the upgrade is ready at the moment, you will definitely receive it later down the line when it is rolled out to everyone. As usual, ensure you have more than 50% of battery, and you have backed up your sensitive data before attempting any OS upgrade.

Crashes and phone bricking rarely happen nowadays, especially given that Android 12 has already been out for a while now and most bugs have been caught and fixed, but it is better to be safe than sorry.

If you want to try out the update before it becomes global, here is a download link. The complete Redmi Note 11 update looks as follows;

  • Device Name: Redmi Note 11
  • Version: MIUI 13.0.2.0 SGCMIXM
  • Codename: spes
  • Type: Stable Beta
  • Region: Global
  • Android version: 12
  • Android security patch level: June 2022

    Xiaomi is the worst company to go to if software support is your priority, rather than they fixing their issues, they just produce an entirely new product!.. for instance if you had REDMI NOTE 11 full of software bugs, they will launch REDMI NOTE 12 for you to buy.. 😅 that is incredibly stupid if you ask me.. Chinese companies don’t hold a candle when compared to Samsung and that’s why a Samsung device will always remain superior.. Lol
