For Samsung, the Galaxy Flip makes up 70% of the foldable units shipped, with the larger and much more expensive Galaxy Fold making up the remaining 30%. This is not overly surprising given that the Galaxy Flip retains the traditional smartphone look while still providing the cool factor and practicality that comes with being a foldable.
However, the main drawback the Flip has had compared to the Fold and other offerings from different manufacturers like the Motorola Razr and Oppo Find N2 Flip is the small external display.
When the first Galaxy Flip was released back in 2020, it featured a 1.1-inch external display, compared to the 2.7-inch found in the Motorola Razr (2020). Three years later and Samsung has not improved much in this area offering a 1.9-inch external display in the Galaxy Flip 4 compared to the 2022 version of the Razr which still retained the 2.7-inch display, not to mention the new OPPO Find N2 Flip that has a bigger 3.3-inch display
A new leak from SuperRoader on Twitter points to Samsung bringing a considerable upgrade in this area for the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Flip 5.
According to the tipster, Samsung would feature two displays in this area, a small one located beside the dual camera set up to display the clock, battery charge level, and AR Emojis and the bigger one at 3.4 inches would likely have more functionalities including interacting with notifications and widgets without opening the phone.
The bigger 3.4-inch screen has an almost square shape with a 1:1.038 aspect ratio. This will, in theory, make it easier for Samsung, and also other app developers like Spotify, to tailor their apps to make use of the real estate that the screen provides. The big screen will also make it easier to take selfies with the primary cameras.
In the renders provided by the tipster, the sides of the Galaxy Flip 5 appear to be flat, although the device seems to have rounded corners. A new water drop hinge is also supposed to be fitted to the Galaxy Flip 5 and, in turn, make it able to be completely folded flat with no gaps between the two halves of the device.
Samsung has not yet mentioned when the Galaxy Flip 5 and Fold 5 will be available. However, a release towards the end of the year makes the most sense. With the release date so far away, what the device packs in terms of specifications remain relatively unknown, however, an improvement to the primary cameras and battery capacity are key issues that Samsung is looking at.
